Why do people think they are revolutionary because they chose not to vote? So if you do not vote who will control the governmental decisions? Is there a chance that the most racist elements of society will garner complete control? Is that your goal? Do you think police who kill unarmed Blacks will have a better chance of being brought to justice if you don’t vote for judges? The only result of not voting is to make those not voting feel like they are smarter than other people. That does not help the black community. help the Black community. You cannot expect perfection. People have to survive, building upon ideological egos serves no purpose. Unless you are suggesting an armed revolution. But, is that to be considered because it is thought to be patriarchal? Unless you are suggesting that we immediately embark on an armed rebellion then you might as well say you subscribe to taking the journey to the moral universe. Do you think the regular people in the Black community think it’s better to give the most racist elements in America a free reign is a good idea?
The people you have concern for in the African American community will suffer if people do not vote. I think people younger than me, I am in my 70s, and even people my age, do not understand how bad things were pre-1960s. You are dealing with people’s lives and the only thing accomplished is the satisfaction of having a superior and more enlightened political position. That means nothing to the people who need jobs today, who need healthcare today, who need judges who will not yield to the political violence of the white supremacist state. It is absolute folly to ignore voting because of a recognition that you cannot achieve your particular perception of a perfect union. Is Obamacare perfect? Of course not but how many Black lives were saved because of the enhanced ability to obtain health insurance? Universal Healthcare would be great, but with that not being a reality should you ignore healthcare? Police kill people and there has been very little change in the system to change that, but does that mean there should be no effort to make changes and allow the reactionary politicians to control all policy and laws? Unless you are promoting a violent revolution to change the world today, you are just engaging in an ego trip by valorizing the uniqueness of your political position rather than addressing the real, and real-time needs of the people. Please do not turn Pan African and Socialist ideologies into a position tantamount to the journey on the road to the Moral Universe.
By the way, I have seen my congressperson pumping gas, and I have had conversations regarding specific pieces of legislation. But the reality is that in a representative democracy, the representatives will in practice not be able to talk to every person about their position on issues. By the way, what do you think people will say when the political decisions made will retard their ability to have access to the information that will allow them to make informed decisions? No there won’t be perfection, but some idea about real politics help. Will electoral politics impact the fact that many people believe there is some creator-based right for Israel to have the right to exist? By ignoring the vote you allow others to set the agenda, with no opposition.
Non-voters, I congratulate you on being politically enlightened, but all you can get is because abstaining from voting is not worth much else.
