Zimbabwe and African Liberation Day

A press conference was held today by members of the December 12th Movement announcing the forthcoming march and rally May 25, 2019 in Washington, D.C. to commemorate African Liberation Day. In particular, organizers focused on the continuing struggle for land and freedom in Zimbabwe as indicative of both the struggle facing Black/African people worldwide and of the course of resistance offered by the example of the people of Zimbabwe to that same African diaspora. Organizers said that Zimbabwe is representative of and connected to the struggles of Black people in the U.S. and everywhere and encouraged memory of pan-African struggles and their collective struggles symbolized and commemorated within the history of African Liberation Day itself.

    “The West, led by Britain and the U.S., have been engaged in a regime change policy against the Southern African nation for the last 18 years.”

    Reasons for examining what is happening in Zimbabwe are many but few to none can be found in accounts by major news media or from liberal progressive pundits. Such accounts are busy reinforcing the over simplified and misinforming narrative that forcing out former 93 year-old president Robert Mugabe marks the end of 37 years of brutal dictatorship that has driven the country into economic disaster.

    The sanctions which were first imposed 1n 2001 by George W. Bush, and continued by Barack Obama and Donald Trump should be removed.

    The Zimbabwe government apparently believes that compensating white farmers for land they stole will help get the sanctions removed.

    “Since 2009 to date, US$64,4 million was paid to 93 former commercial farmers as compensation for immovable improvements. In 2018 alone, US$12 million was paid to 29 farmers. In the 2019 National Budget we set aside US$53 million for the same purpose.” Zimbabwe Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube
